I was born in Front Royal, Virginia, but when I was five years old, my parents decided to take a vacation to Florida and the rest is history. We picked up and moved to Hollywood, Florida shortly thereafter. I guess my father figured he could golf 365 days a year. Unfortunately the joke was on him, as he had to get a real job and didn't get to golf as much as he would've liked. If I learned anything from my father, it was to make my living doing something I loved and that's where my life has taken me.

When I was a young boy, my parents saw that I liked to draw and paint, and so decided to get me art lessons with a private instructor, which paid off later. I attended the Fort Lauderdale Art Institute but then left when, at the age of 23, the Fort Lauderdale News took a chance on me, offering up a job as an Editorial artist. I created anything from spot art cartoons to serious illustrations on various topics, working there for five and a half years under tight deadlines. I learned to problem-solve quickly, which prepared me for a later stint at the Miami Herald. I worked for the Herald for almost four years, and in that time even did illustrations for a couple of Dave Barry's stories.

I broke off on my own as a freelance artist in 1980 and have been working at home ever since. I've been commissioned to do books, advertising illustrations, portraits, posters, murals and even tattoos. You name it and I've probably done it. I still work traditionally, and enjoy implementing several styles and techniques ranging from cartoon work to more realistic airbrush renderings. I love to characterize both people and animals. For realistic subject matter, I particularly take pleasure in creating seascapes, since I spend a lot of time in and around the ocean.

Even though freelancing can be a rollercoaster ride at times, I feel very lucky to be able to make a living as an artist, especially since it allows me to spend time with my wife Leslee and our two sons, Matt and Zach. Both of my boys are talented in ways other than art: Zach (the younger one) is a good surfer, while Matt is quite a skilled photographer. The three of us all surf and are fortunate enough to live within walking distance to the beach. Yes, you do see sharks occasionally (more so in the summer), but the best thing to do is pull your feet up and just let them pass, and if it's a big one, paddle in.
